What the numbers mean

Distance is measured from the place to the storm's center line, drawn as straight lines between the six-hourly best-track positions. A storm's winds reach well beyond its center, so a storm listed at 40 miles may have brought strong wind, and one just outside the ring may also have. The list is a record of track positions, not of impacts.

Strength when closest is the classification at the six-hourly record nearest to the moment of closest approach, and the wind is that record's one-minute sustained wind. The strength filter only counts the parts of a track where the storm held at least that strength at both ends of a six-hourly step.

The place list holds the 1,135 towns and cities of 10,000 people or more in Natural Earth's populated-places file between the Caribbean and Canada and from Hawaii to Bermuda. Coordinates reach any other spot. Records before the 1960s are thinner, above all far from land: see how to read the record.
